Before you arrive

Your first Regular Pilates session. What to expect.

You do not need to be flexible or know the equipment. A first private session gives you time to explain your starting point, learn the setup and complete a guided introductory sequence.

A simple checklist

Bring context. Wear clothes you can move in.

There is no special preparation routine. The useful information is anything that could change how you exercise safely or comfortably.

01

Wear fitted, comfortable clothing

Choose clothing that allows free movement and lets the instructor see general alignment. Grip socks may be requested by the studio.

02

Share relevant health information

Mention pain, injury, pregnancy, recent surgery, dizziness, medical advice or any condition that affects exercise.

03

Describe your current activity

Walking, gym work, sport, desk time and long breaks from exercise all help establish a sensible starting point.

04

Choose one practical goal

Examples include learning the equipment, moving more confidently or building a consistent strength practice.

What happens

Four parts of your first session.

01

Conversation

Your instructor asks about goals, exercise history and anything that changes what feels appropriate.

02

Orientation

You learn the carriage, springs, footbar, straps and how to enter and leave the equipment.

03

Guided movement

A short sequence introduces resistance, control and breathing with time for questions and rest.

04

Review

You discuss what felt clear, what needs adapting and whether Regular Pilates is the right route.

The instructor may change spring tension, footbar height, body position, range or the exercise itself. These changes are normal. They do not mean you are failing the movement.

You should be able to ask why an exercise was selected and say when something feels unclear. Muscle effort can be expected. Sharp pain, dizziness, chest discomfort, unusual breathlessness or feeling unwell are reasons to stop.

What should you expect afterwards?

You may notice that unfamiliar muscles have worked, but severe soreness is not the goal. A first session is mainly an orientation and baseline. Your next session can then build on what the instructor observed rather than starting from assumptions.

You do not need to “push through” to make the session count.

Control, understanding and a repeatable starting point matter more than completing the hardest variation on the first day.

Private or Clinical Pilates?

The right first session depends on why you are coming.

Regular Pilates

For adults seeking one-to-one exercise coaching for strength, mobility, control and general movement confidence.

Clinical Pilates

For a physiotherapist-led starting point when pain, injury, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, recent surgery or a health condition changes the exercise plan.

Medical review first

For new or unexplained symptoms, unstable health concerns, or when your treating clinician has advised assessment before exercise.
